Yes We've Moved
It was a great run at our old location, the venerable Ten Mile House, but all good things must come to an end. And now, it is with tremendous excitement and pride that we announce that our new home is located at 1248 Bedford Highway. The new shop sits directly on the Bedford Highway, midway between our original store in Mill Cove and the Old Ten Mile House. The building has been totally renovated inside and out, and now that everything is completed, this is what the building looks like from the outside. The interior consists of 3,000 + sq. feet of retail space, all on one floor, with twelve foot ceilings and tons of natural light shining thoughout the open space. A brand new fifty seven foot deck has been built on the front of the building and will in the very near future provide our customers a place to hang out both before and after their ride. Espresso bar, tables and chairs for outside relaxion and socializing? You bet, its in the works. We believe our new shop will become "The Hub" for all Metro cyclists to meet and share their passion for the sport. Folks, we welcome you to 1248 Bedford Highway. We love our new home, and we hope you do as well!

Once Again, Saturday Is A Go For Our BIG Move
It was a great day at 1248, progress everywhere. John Goshn, owner of the building was overseeing the paving of the parking lot and dropped back later in the evening to check on the buildings progress. Of course I was still there, because that's what I do, I outwork everybody else to stay ahead of them. You see, as a kid I was given way too many brains. I knew I was smarter than everybody else, but I didn't take advantage of it, didn't become a doctor, lawyer, or Indian Chief because none of those jobs interested me. So now some 30 years later I compensate by working harder than anybody else. I've always had this ability and in situations like this I utilize it to my maximum benefit. So Saturday is a definite go for the move, I repeat a definite go. After a few scary moments, everthing has fallen into place and we'll be ready to move at 9 am on Saturday at the old shop. Anybody interested in helping who hasn't volunteered already, please feel free to drop us a line. We'll give you the latest info and lowdown on move related facts. Don't be shy, as they say, the more the merrier!

It's A Green Light For This Saturday
Houston, countdown has begun, 120 hours and moving forward. Roger, Mission Control, we read you load and clear. So with a bit of help from the world wide web, a touch of well directed complaining, and a whole lot of help from Eastlink, it appears the no phone, hiccup has subsided. So armed with a phone, internet, and a building almost ready to go, we've got the green light to make our move this Saturday. So what's up with 1248? My focus has been to organize the move and enable us to get up and running and serving our customers as soon as possible. Saturday, Sunday, Monday will be toast, and with a Herculean effort by all, we're hoping to open Tuesday in some state, albeit probably very rough and disorganized at best. The basement has begun its "drying out" process. The front and back of the building will be paved tomorrow, the windows and doors are being worked, Aaron's new work place has been the key focus for me during my late nights at the new shop, in an attempt to minimize downtime for service work we are already swamped with. Signage is in the final stages of approval, the deck will be completed by weeks end, on and on and on. So yes, a pile of activity is going on, a pile still has still to go on, but things are really starting to take shape at 1248. Please bare with us during our transition, we're working as hard as we possibly can to help everyone get back on the road as soon as possible. We look forward to seeing you at our new home, and hope "your socks are knocked off by what you see."

Will The Move Be Next Week?
Looks like that decision is still up in the air at this point in time. Still lots of finishing touches to be done at 1248, along with a few small hiccups that I'm sure can be overcome if the desire to address them is deemed a priority, but as it stands right now, things are not 100% a go for next week. I want to extend a huge thanks to my present Landlord, and local Bedford businessman, Mickey McDonald for not pulling the rug out from under me at the Old Ten Mile House. If it were not for his generosity and understanding, we could potentially be in a real pickle at this moment. Thanks Mickey! As for 1248, don't get me wrong, it's looking great, too great to show you yet, but with a week to go, and commitments made, it's looking less likely by the day that we'll be pulling the trigger on July 28th. But who knows, things change, and if the "Bike Gods" get aligned, everything may come off as planned. For those extremely generous souls who have volunteered to help us with the move, trust me, I'll keep you updated, and by mid week a decision will be made. Thanks to everyone who has followed this page, I've really enjoyed showing you the changes as they've happened. There is no doubt about it, when 1248 is ready to roll, it will become the new benchmark for bikes shops across the nation. We're just not sure when it will be ready to roll. Stay tuned for updates.

Things Are Coming Together
So I'm stressed about the move, because I've got too many things to do. Alarm systems, new signage, power hookup, internet connections, and a bit of carpentry work to take care of myself, but even with all this stuff hanging over my head, I'm very pleased with the way 1248 Bedford Highway is taking shape. Hardwood floors, spacious high ceilings, beyond belief amounts of natural light, stunning colors, and soon to be amazing product presentation, will all make this shop the envy of many independent bicycle retailers across Canada. Are you excited? We hope so. Plan on joining us for our Grand Reopening at 1248, the date to be announced shortly. Trust us, you won't want to miss this event!

Moving Day Confirmed
So I've been holding out on announcing our official moving date up until now, but today, the time is right. Mark it on you calendar folks, hang your head out the window at scream at the top of your lungs, I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore, and by the way I'm pledging to help Bikes Plus move on Saturday, July 28. What time BMan? Anytime between 8 am till 4 pm that you feel you may be able to contribute just a bit of help, we'll take you and compensate you to the max. Pizza, beer, lots of encouragement, "You, and only you can lift that 2,000 lb box" and a few gift certificates will be handed out to those who work like dogs all day and don't bark. We've got "Big" Andrew Martin lined up to drive a "Big" truck, and hopefully lots of volunteers to help fill it and be like ants carrying things into the "hill" and then out of the "hill" upon arrival at 1248. If you can help, if you think you can help, or wish you could help, send us an email at this link, Yes BMan, I'm Crazy and I'm Willing To Help You Move and I'll gladly send out a reminder to all of you a day or two before just to confirm everything is a go. Thanks so much for your consideration. Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock, the countdown is on.

Progress Continues As Moving Day Approaches
OK, so 1248 Bedford Highway was supposed to be handed over to us today, but it didn't happen. Did I lose it? Nope. Am I disappointed? Yes. Will it be the end of the world? Definitely not. I'm not known as the most patient man, actually one might consider me to be one of the most impatient men in the world, but I understand time lines, I understand doing it right, and I understand that the end product will be worth the extra wait. That being said, today was an outside day at 1248. After the bricklayer got a limited start on repointing the brick work, the storefront guys showed up today and the tired, old (and very heavy) windows were removed, new aluminum frames assembled, and tomorrow new glass will be installed. Crazy colors inside will happen tomorrow as well as the painters move in, as the hardwood floor guys move out for a a few days, only to return on the weekend. Will is on vacation, attending a wedding in Ontario, (have fun Will) and I'm sure he's checking on the progress made today. Don't worry Will, things are fine, and I appreciate all your help to date. See you Friday!

No Holidays For 1248
As mentioned in todays blog update, there is no rest for the wicked. So that being said, myself, and the painters at 1248 Bedford Highway, decided to make the most of a wasted day, by brightening up the new location. Tomorrow? Color, real color, Rhonda color, lots of color, so hang on to your hats folks, this place will look anything but normal/safe/ boring within the next few days. Expect the outrageous at Bicyles Plus. Outrageous, color, outrageous service, and outrageous value. We wouldn't have it any other way.

Busy Week at 1248
Lots of action today at 1248! Out back the retaining wall for the new parking lot is now underway. Out front the frame is built for the new fifty seven foot deck where Metro cyclist will hang out and sip latte and espressos from our soon to be coffee bar. Inside the hardwood floors are being refinished, trim work is being applied, and next up will be paint. So although the building is behind schedule, the old saying the "Rome wasn't built in day" may apply here. As with any old building, there are always surprises and these take time to clear up. All in all, things are looking very good and everyone getting exciting. Check out the photos above, and keep your eyes on the progress as you drive by 1248 in the next week or two.

Action Inside and Out
Dropped by 1248 today and saw many things on the go as the July 1 deadline moves closer and closer by the day. Inside, drywall crackfilling is coming along nicely. Outside, the work has started on the sona tubes for the front deck, and in a few days once the base of the deck is in place, the bricks will be repointed and new aluminum storefront windows and doors will be installed. A new boiler, which weighs over 800 pounds is being hoisted into the basement, and plans to start the new parking lot retaining wall are now complete. Rhonda Strictland is getting closer to working her magic with floor, paint, and trim choices as well as firming up the design of our new coffee bar that we are working on in conjunction with Jim Dikaios, of Java Blend. Exciting? You bet!

Fill Those Cracks
Today was 1248 day, actually every Tuesday from here on in until we move will be 1248 designated day. That's the one day a week I focus on taking care of the most important next steps of our move. Visited the site today with Kristie, chatted with Will, and got the lowdown on what's going well and what's slowing things down. Crackfillers don't want to work when the carpenter is using his saw, as the dust messes with their work, the hardwood floor guys can't sand with the drywall guys dropping mud on their head, the wheel seems to go round and round. I have to admit, I liked it a lot better last week when I saw, the huge excavator out back, two electricians, two plumbers, and one carpenter all working in harmony together on the old building. But hey, I'm getting a little antsy, as the move approaches, and envision the last minute scramble coming to a head. They say patience is a virtue, too bad I don't have any.

Never Made It
Today the gun went off well before we opened the doors at Bikes Plus, and as much as I had planned on heading up to view the latest 1248 Bedford Highway progress, it just didn't happen. These photos are from two days ago as the drywall was going up. The front of the building will soon have a new deck, the exposed brick work will all be repointed, new aluminum storefront windows, in the works, and inside, well just lets say things will become absolutely amazing in a very short period of time. The next two weeks for me look like at least 14 to 18 hour days, and as much as I'm fearing them, thinking they may bury me, I'm equally as excited about about them possibly supercharging me. Go figure, that's the way most insane people think, insanely!

Holmes On Homes?
Pretty cool to see how powerful the internet can be utilized as a tool to relay information to a very diverse audience. In a very short period, the numbers and interest have grown substantially on the progress of our beloved new location, 1248 Bedford Highway. As of today we've had over 3,000 hits on this page, as Metro cyclists, our best customers, friends, and family check in to see whats new, so I'm hoping we don't disappoint you. Today was an amazing day long before I made it to 1248 late in the day. It started off with a call from the building owner, John Ghosn, giving me a personal update on the status of 1248. I can't help mentioning how many times John mentioned "doing it right" during our conversation, and doing it right he is. That led the way to a wonderful day of blue skies , lots of interesting 1248 developements, and a bike ride to top all bike rides. OK, back to 1248 Bedford Highway, the drywall guys were hard at work hanging wall board, electricians were touching up odds and sods, and the new parking lot was covered with some fresh gravel, as progress continues both inside and outside of 1248. Tomorrow? More of the same. I meet with Rhonda early tomorrow morning to finalize colors to be used in the shop, flooring details, and more. I'll check in with Will in the afternoon and discuss slatwall location and needs, and give him a big hug for a special request by me he entertained and executed today. Thanks Will, I appreciate it. Updates to follow, so stay tuned.

Big Week Ahead
Well what's the latest and greatest at 1248 you ask? Let's have a look. The excavator thats been hammering rock for over three days in our new rear parking lot at a million dollars an hour, is now gone. (Please lets all take a collective sigh of relief at this moment to celebrate) But before leaving , the BIG Machine did manage to clean up the old deck, concrete steps, and retaining wall in the front of the building to allow Will and his crew to prepare for the new front deck installation. The new deck will be a platform for much joy and celebration during grand opening night, and hopefully for years to come as a spot for Metro cyclists to hang out after a refreshing local ride. Inside, all electrical, carpentry, and plumbing is complete. Drywall starts in earnest this week, and before you know it, the paint will be on the walls. Hardwood floor refinishing in the main showroom? That's also in the cards for the next week if we can dry the old building out enough.

Inside/Out
OK, up till now you have only seen the outside of 1248 as it goes through the process of being reborn. Today let's take a step inside and see what's in store for those who get past the exterior walls. Nothing special here folks, a major construction zone at present, but by weeks end the drywall will be going up, and after that, we'll see paint, colors, flooring, and finishing touches inside and out that will knock your socks off. 1248 will have a few surprises waiting for you if our hard work pans out, and we hope it does, so wish us well as we hope to expand our offerings to you, "Our most valued customers."

Activity Plus
Headed into the shop this morning with the staff pays and thought it only appropriate to head up to 1248 to see what was going on. Where do I begin? There was an excavator in the back of the building creating our new 5,000 car capacity parking lot, the siding on the front of the building is now complete other than a bit of paint. The new windows are now in all around except for the storefront ones, which will be completed after the excavator does its muscle work in the front of the building by ripping out all remnants of the existing deck before the new one is built. Inside, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians continue to remould the interior of 1248 into its new function, and that is to be our home for at least the next five years. Exciting? Yes indeed!

Looking Good!
We've been amazed at the amount of folks commenting on the progress of 1248 Bedford Highway these days. They've been friends of the owner of the building, many of our regular customers who have been following the progress both live and online, and also some of our new neighbours. Everybody is excited about how the old building which had been showing its age for years is in the process of being reborn into this very cool building that will house us and our business for at least the next five years, and hopefully forever. My good friend Peter Dwyer dropped in today and gave me an up close, personal history of the building relayed to him via Mr. Koppernaes of Bedford, a past owner of the building. Apparently the building was built to house the original Bank of Nova Scotia in Bedford, which explains why their is a vault found on the main floor and also in the basement. Too bad I didn't have any money to put in the vault, not even on the main floor, let alone in the basement, but that's a story for another day and another time. Thanks for checking on the progress and please continue to do so. All of us at Bikes Plus are stoked about the new building, and looking forward to our new digs.

Houston, We Have Glass
Heard the rumor yesterday, and I just had to check it out today. Yes folks, its true, windows have arrived at 1248! Once the glass is installed we're weather tight again, and changes to the inside will begin to happen in earnest. Just like in the "Where's Waldo" books, did you happen notice Le Grande Orange sitting in front of the building foreground, mid left? If so, could it be more than just a coincidence that that orange siding color is almost identical to the color of my most favored and most faithful, "Le Grande Orange?" I think not.

Movin On Up
Dropped by today for a visit to the new site on my day off before I went to work. Confusing? Yes, but that's a story for another day. The siding and framing are ready for the new windows, inside the place is a mess again as the electricians have gutted the place while running new wires. I met a carpenter today who gruffly asked who I was and what was I doing in the building. Told him I am the guy that moves in when he moves out. Good guy, he laughed and then gave me a tour of what he was doing and hoping to do. This place will be a knockout, I can hardly wait for our "Grand Opening" party. I'll probably sleep on the brand new deck out front of the building that night. If you look closely at the photo above you will see the two main colors of the storefront. The orange, yes we see that, and the dark grey, on the right, not the light grey you see in the middle. Next up, windows! I say, bring them on.
|
 |
Progress Both Inside and Out
I made an unofficial visit to the site today and the action is definitely heating up. Outside the siding is moving on up, and the bright orange, yes that will be one of the buildings colors when everything is complete, has been getting a fair bit of attention. The new windows are due late next week, so until their arrival, the siding and much of the interior work is on horizontal hold. Inside, the electricians have holes punched in the walls, ceilings and floors, as the 1248 building gets a total functional face lift inside and out. I'll be meeting with the project co-ordinator bright and early tomorrow morning to ask a few questions, get some great advice, and find out the very latest information on our new home, 1248 Bedford Highway. Stay tuned for updates!

Let The Transformation Begin
Work has begun on our new location, 1248 Bedford Highway, and we're hoping to keep you up to speed as the work progresses. I dropped by the site last week and the guys commented on the local buzz that has been created by the work. People walking by asking what's going on, who's moving in, and motorists slowing down to have a look as they pass the old building. Exciting indeed.
